IHPCSS 2023 — International High Performance Computing Summer School (mentor, Atlanta, GA)
Date:
Mentor, Atlanta, GA, USA — Georgia Institute of Technology, Global Learning Center (IHPCSS 2023)
I was a mentor at the International High Performance Computing Summer School (IHPCSS 2023, July 9–14, 2023) at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The week includes shared lectures, hands-on HPC work, and mentor discussions alongside faculty.
In 2019 I attended IHPCSS as a student in Kobe, Japan, with a one-minute talk and an electronic poster session—see the IHPCSS 2019 page and poster session slides from Kobe (PDF). In 2023 I returned to IHPCSS as a mentor (same program, different role).
Abstract (HPC in life sciences)
High-performance computing (HPC) has emerged as a vital tool in life sciences, enabling the study of complex biological systems at unprecedented levels of detail. However, the unique challenges posed by multi-scale modeling and experiments require careful consideration for effective utilization of HPC resources. Simulations in biophysics demand substantial computational power, efficient algorithms, and accurate models (force fields). The challenges include managing long simulation times and addressing the balance between accuracy and computational cost. Analysis of biophysical data generated from simulations and experiments presents additional challenges, such as processing and interpreting vast amounts of data. Effective analysis methods are crucial for extracting meaningful insights from complex biophysical data and driving scientific discovery. Furthermore, education and training in HPC pose further challenges, including developing accessible and user-friendly interfaces for researchers with limited computational backgrounds. Overcoming these challenges requires collaborative efforts among researchers, computational scientists, and educators to efficiently leverage HPC resources and advance our understanding of biophysical phenomena and their applications in healthcare, drug discovery, and beyond.
